Jiyū Gata – The Free Expression of Karate

Jiyū Gata gives karateka the opportunity to demonstrate their skills beyond the standard syllabus. Unlike Shitei or Sentei Gata, which are fixed and required, Jiyū Gata allows students to choose a kata that best showcases their strengths, style, and understanding of karate.

Performing Jiyū Gata is a true test of individuality, spirit, and mastery. It challenges the karateka to show precision, power, rhythm, and confidence while expressing their personal interpretation of Shotokan principles.

At Sensei Bernard’s dojo, we encourage students to approach Jiyū Gata as both a technical challenge and an artistic expression — a chance to display the essence of their karate journey.
